Finding a Quality Realtor
Whether you are the buyer or the seller, purchasing or selling a home is one of the most significant times in your life. Filled with apprehension and uncertainty, it is often difficult for first-time buyers and sellers to know what to expect. Even if you have purchased or sold a home before, every situation is unique and can be filled with a host of issues you did not expect.
For these reasons, and many more, it is important that you find a quality realtor that can help you navigate the landscape of buying or selling a home. Your realtor is the person that should guide you through the entire process, answer any questions you might have, and look out for your best interests. If you are in the market to buy or sell a home, here are some ways in which you can ensure you are finding a quality realtor:
- When considering hiring a realtor, ask them for a list of prior or recent clients, and their contact information. Speak with at least several of those clients, and ask questions regarding selling price, asking price, were they happy with the experience, did the realtor answer all of their questions and keep them informed, etc.
- Each state has a licensing board for real estate agents. You should search your state’s licensing board to make sure the realtor you are considering is in good standing and has not had any disciplinary actions against him or her.
- Be sure that you select the right realtor based on your needs. Real estate agents have specialties, and understanding their credentials and their specialty can make or break your experience with that realtor. A CRS is a certified residential specialist, an ABR is an accredited buyer’s representative, and a SRES is a seniors real estate specialist.
- Always ask how long your realtor has been in the business. Typically if it is less than five years, they are still learning and may not be the right fit for you. You will want a seasoned realtor who is actively engaged in the real estate market.
In addition, you should ask about their current listings and other houses that are for sale nearby. Good quality agents will know their market and will know what houses in the area are for sale, what has recently sold, etc. Remember you want to engage with a quality realtor that is looking out for your best interests, and is knowledgeable in their area and specialty. Finding a quality realtor may take some time, but once you do, your home buying or selling experience will be much better!
